US FLIGHTNET serves as a central clearinghouse between air charter operators and the travelling public. Air charter operators (or air taxis) are licensed and regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. These operators maintain aircraft, flight crews and operations under the strict oversight of the FAA. They operate aircraft available for private charter to anywhere each is licensed to fly.
Normally, their flights involve round trip charters and there are few opportunities for US FLIGHTNET to utilize these flights. However, there are some flights where the aircraft must reposition prior to the next flight. For example, a flight might drop-off passengers and return home empty. Or, the plane might need to pick up passengers at some location and fly empty to the pick-up location. US FLIGHTNET locates these empty flights and maintains availability through its computer system. There are also some charter flights which have unused seats which might be available. Flight availability is presented in the Web Site displays.
The air charter industry has experienced significant growth over the past several years partly as a result of airline capacity limits. When flights are full, not convenient, or expensive, charter often becomes a practical alternative. The flights leave when the passengers get to the plane, go to an airport closer to the intended destination, and avoid the congestion of the major airports. In fact, under some circumstances, direct charters are actually cheaper than the commercial airline fare. But they are almost always more personal, convenient and quicker than the airline alternative.
In the past, charter has been considered beyond the reach of most passengers due to its cost. But US FLIGHTNET can bring the cost down and make the convenience and personal service available to travellers.
